Offense
Miller is an intriguing prospect due to his size, length, and ball skills. As a teen, he had a late growth spurt before arriving at FSU from Spain, shooting from a six-foot guard to a 6’11” forward while maintaining his guard skills. He can grab a rebound, push the fast break, and is trusted to make the correct pass or play in the open court, but he needs to exude more confidence in his jumper.
Miller is a consistent finisher close to the rim, shooting 72.5 percent within three feet (Synergy Sports). With his length, he is crafty, using up-fakes or reverse layups to draw contact and occasionally get to the line. Miller needs to improve his free-throw shooting. He could also be more offensively aggressive, leading to increased attempts at the line and showing his development to potential evaluators.
He moves well off the ball to find space in the midrange or pockets close to the basket to operate from and score the ball effectively. Miller has a distinct talent for impacting winning, even if he does not fill the box score with points. He has a strong feel for the game overall and can almost pick and choose when to exert his will on the game. Though he has not shown distinct standout skills, his versatility shines, and he is highly coachable under John Jakus.
Defense
On the defensive side of the ball, Miller’s athleticism and versatility are where he truly shines. He can guard multiple positions effectively, disrupt passing lanes with his length and anticipation, and frequently is the point of attack when FAU rolls out their 1-2-1 or 3-2 defensive schemes. Guards have a tough time getting by Miller due to his 7-foot-2 wingspan, intensity and commitment to the defense.
Miller stays low in a stance, remaining in front of his opponents while continually moving his feet. His defensive size, quickness, energy, and ability to see both the ball and his man have led to numerous deflections that don’t end up on a box score but disrupt the opponent’s offensive flow. Miller is aggressive but doesn’t often end up in foul trouble. From the end of November to the beginning of conference play in the American Athletic Conference, Miller has averaged almost 2.5 blocks per game while making high-level reads.
Looking Ahead
After initial projections as a lottery pick before his freshman campaign at Florida State University, Miller’s stock dipped due to eligibility issues and underperformance on the court. With a change in scenery, he has increased across all of his statistical categories, as he is one of the focal points of the Owls’ offense and defense. At this point, he looks to be a second-round pick with extreme growth potential at the next level if given the right situation.
Miller’s NBA position may be challenging to define because he has the physical tools to be a great 3-and-D player. However, his three-point shooting needs continued improvement and lacks consistency. He has shown he has the footspeed to switch to the perimeter when needed and can defend wings and forwards, but will the physicality at the next level hinder those abilities?
Miller’s offensive game may be part Danilo Gallinari/part Hedo Turkoglu. Hopefully, he can be a consistent outside-shooting threat with more development of his jumper, but the defensive skills he brings to the court need to be at the forefront and continue to allow his game to blossom. He won’t be a player who needs the ball in his hands often, but he knows where to be and when to attack in the flow.
